Showing Up Matters

I learned an important lesson this week: Showing up matters.

This week, I discovered that my sprinkler system was not working. This was unfortunate timing, as Becky and I are in the process of putting our house on the market. We are in the process of fixing things around the house; and for the life of me, I could not figure this issue out. It just so happens (lucky me!) that my father-in-law is a licensed irrigator (something he has done professionally for part of his life). I immediately got on the phone with him, texted him pictures of wires I could not make sense of and tried to understand a system that was a bit like a foreign language to me.

My father-in-law is a really good man. He was so patient with me. He talked me through a few solutions over the phone, sent me to the store with a list of basic supplies and told me what I needed to do to fix the issue. Nothing worked. I called back to ask him one more question and he replied, “Don’t do anything – I’ll be there in five hours.” My father-in-law drove from Houston to Dallas on a moment’s notice to fix our sprinkler system. I ended up learning a lot about how sprinkler systems work this week; but the most valuable lesson I learned in this process is – often, the most effective way to solve a problem is to show up.

This is a lesson that our church is learning. We have been making changes around the church – new signage, new hospitality systems, reworking our children’s check-in computers, etc. But, we can’t do this without you. Under our new system, some weeks, we need 70 volunteers just to run The Well. This number does not include youth volunteers, children’s volunteers, or volunteers on the traditional side.

It takes you showing up to do church well. We MUST always think about THE ONE. How do we do church well so that THE ONE may experience Christ’s perfect love, perhaps for the first time?
