Welcome to this e-mail edition of The Music of St. Andrew. The purpose of this e-newsletter is simple. As the church and its music ministry grows, the music family and its supporters need to remain aware of the musical happenings at St. Andrew. It is emailed to our ensembles which represent hundreds of musicians, as well as to a list of our faithful music supporters in our community and around the world. We hope you find it informative and helpful.

From St. Andrew with Love

Each year, 300-400 of our youth choir's biggest fans attend the Salt and Light Valentine fundraiser shows, "From St. Andrew With Love". This year, both shows take place on Sunday, February 8, and are filled with love songs and Broadway favorites. We are honored to have as our special guests, the children's choirs of St. Andrew as well as the full choir of Salt & Light and individual artists! Tickets are $5 for students, $8 general admission, and $15 and $30 for patrons. The purchase of patron level tickets assures prime seating and name recognition in the printed program. 100% of proceeds goes directly to the summer choir tour fund. Tickets can be purchased from youth choir members or by calling the music office at 214-291-8002.

This year Salt and Light will be adding a Silent Auction to their valentine show. The silent auction will open at 3:30pm and bidding will end at 6:45pm on Sunday, February 8 in room 127.  We will also have a special "buy it now" on selected items. Those items can either be bid on or, if it's something you really want, you can pay the set "buy it now" price. A list of auction items can be found at http://saumcchoir.webs.com

All proceeds from the auction will go to the general fund for the 2009 Salt and Light choir tour. If you have any questions regarding the silent auction, please contact Alicia Nation at youthchoir09@yahoo.com

Ash Wednesday Worship

Ash Wednesday begins the season of Lent. It occurs forty-six days before Easter, but Lent is nevertheless considered forty days long, because Sundays in this period are not counted as days of penance. At services of worship on this day, worshipers are blessed with ashes. The minister marks the forehead of each congregant with black ashes, in the shape of a cross, which the worshiper traditionally bears until washing it off after sundown. The symbolism echoes the ancient tradition of throwing ash over one's head signifying repentance before God (as related numerous times in the Bible). The ashes are prepared by burning palm leaves from the previous year's Palm Sunday celebrations and mixing them with olive oil as a fixative. Ash Wednesday is a time of repentance-a day of contemplating one's transgressions.

Ash Wednesday will be observed February 25 at 7:00pm in the Sanctuary with music by the Chancel Choir. Following the meditation, worshipers will receive the blessing of ashes. Begin your journey through Lent to Easter by experiencing this worship service.
